Rob,
A good Neutrik XLR will take the abuse the best. I know that sheilded twisted pair is the preferred cable but I think all I ever see is microphone cords being used.
What is "snub network?"
CCSGINC,
So do they say you can wye right at the DVR?

They said you can wye at the DVR if you need to go in 2 different directions, or you can wye right behind each camera. They said that home runs are just an option for the installer, no performance difference.

I don't know what a snub network really is either.... But I think it simply refers to a short segment where reflection isn't an issue....
It's not the XLR that's taking the abuse. It's a the 20ft length of solid Cat 5 past the last tie-down, that keeps getting tossed from a balcony, down to the light op, and then tossed back up after a performance, then coiled.... The first guy to rig the lights used a "Cold Heat" and left COLD solder! After a couple shows, the lights were acting weird, and the XLR was barely still attached. I cut it out and replaced it.
So twisted, what do you do in lighting?

I sub to a pro audio/video company too. We install systems in churches, arenas, theatres and nightclubs. We also do the intelligent and moving heads lighting involving DMX.
Kind of funny that they tell you it's okay to wye at the DVR location and only run on two conductors. By not having a return path on RS485, each leg it now an open termination with no EOL. I too have run into this and have often wondered how do you determine which camera to turn the EOL on?
IMO the only proper way would be to use 4 conductors on those legs, a Tx pair and a Rx pair which continues on to the next camera. Maybe I'm wrong, and by doing it my way it would cause more reflection!
