There are USB extender devices out there that can replicate USB more than the standard 15 ft limits. This would work in a pinch.

If they insist on needing networked cameras, I've been looking at the Panasonic ones for a while, and they have http servers built in for configuration and viewing. They also network with up to 3 or 7 other panasonic network cameras so that one camera's page can view all of them.

For my business I recommend ZoneMinder (OpenSource DVR Package) and CCTV Camera's. Unless he needs PTZ support. Then go either CCTV + RS485 or IP-Cam. For reliability (unless they want to be cutting edge) I would stick to good old fashioned CCTV Cam's. IP cam's tend to be problematic and more for the housewife looking to put on a show on the internet.

If he just wants to use it as a theft deterrent then just get a couple cheap CCTV Camera's, some Siamese cable, and a quad-box to cycle through the cam's. Then if later he wants to add time-lapse VCR or a DVR Security server you can T off the quad-box and get the best of both worlds.

For customers that want pure IP camera's on a tight budget I have used D-Link. Some of them have a built in http server and you can record to a server across the network. You are much better off with a DVR in a commercial environment though .
