I am going to be installing two video cameras about 1400' from the DVR. They are for a front gate. I have two direct bury cat5 lines pulled threw conduit back to the house. Power supply for the cameras will be provided locally at the cameras, and video will be over the cat5 using baluans. Is it necessary to provide lightning/surge suppression on this?, if so what do you recommend?

Thanks

Hi Anthony! Last time I was at ADI they had a bunch of different baluns on the shelf, some with built in surge suppression. They may have been "active" baluns, I can't recall. 1400 feet is a long haul. Are you using "active" baluns? Nitek has "transient Protection", and other devices for surge suppression on some of their UTP products https://www.nitek.net/utp-trans.html I haven't used Nitek yet.

Maybe something like https://www.nitek.net/products/TT560.htm The web site says
* Active electronics compensate for frequency and level loss
* Built-in protection from power surge, transients, static or other electrical interference
* High resolution color or monochrome video
* Complete immunity to ground loop; video and AC can be run in a common raceway, where allowed
* Video can be run in the same cable with telephone and computer signals
* Weatherproof design
* Easy to install

Thanks I will take a look...On the walk threw I tested the cable I actually got a very clear picture using passive baluns, I was very surprised considering the length. When we go back to install the cameras we will be using active baluns on these.
I was also thinking about using something like this .

Anthony I am not surprised that you got a very clear signal using passive baluns. Your ordinary passive screw-type can usually go up to 2,000 feet. That's a very cool device in your last link. Do some PTZ cameras require a 4-wire data interface? With 4 wires you could do RS232, RS485, or RS422 and probably any proprietary system out there. It is really helpful that now everything can be done and done well on good old CAT5E. Video, power, and PTZ all on the same cable with all the manufacturers offering baluns for this now. I really like the Digimerge DVR units, particularly their remote software - Digiclient 8.0. In my own condo building we got a Everfocus, very solid unit but the remote software is just an Active X control without many bells and whistles. It works fine though and serves my purpose OK. Are you putting in PTZ on this current job? I would love to get one of the $xxx.xx Samsungs on sale this month at ADI.

The Samsungs I was referring to are PTZ cameras, not DVRs. ADI has some decent prices on 4 channel DVRs wuth remote viewing. I have a used 4-channel Digimerge which I am probably going to install for a neighbor. I swapped it out for a 16 channel at a customer in Century City. It's used but works perfectly. Do you want it?

PM sent, I need to get myself to ADI within the next week or so, I will take a look at the Samsungs. I have a job we are working now where a PTZ would be perfect but the owner does not want to spring for the $$$$

I would love to get a Samsung PTZ for our condo building but I doubt that the homeowner's association will spring for the $700. on sale at ADI. Once you go PTZ, there's no going back to fixed cameras! I now have 8 cameras on my 9-camera DVR. At night, the entry lights kick in and wreak havoc on the reception of one cam. I have to figure out how to move the wires away from that flourescent fixture.
