You cannot program via the jack on the CPU - can only program via the RS-232/422 ports brought out via backplane connector to I/O panel. Or via modem - will require a phone with TR/CON key programmed or fixed (M64, 160 or any of the Wave style phones).
Though you can default the system by removing the battery straps, this would cause the loss of any downloaded features - so this is last resort. Once into programming there is a default and reset funcition that preserves features.
Do the phones work? Even with basic/old programming you should get intercom dialtone and be able to make intercom calls.

it's the best system I ever worked on, I really don't see anyone else's product coming close between ease of programming and diagnostics (best diagnostics "C" screen I've ever seen) (wish some of the newer systems would have something comparable). This system will last you 10 to 15 years and has just about every feature you will require in the telecom world and more. With that said, why don't you follow everyone else's advice in this thread and get someone with an IDS background to help you set it up? It will pay you back in dividends.
