Okay, Had an atlas IIE I blew up today, long story... but we outgrew it and toasted it while trying to upgrade it. So on to the Executone...
We are IT recyclers and have a Executone IDS Big Cabinet that looks promising to replaced the now broken Atlas system... SO here are myt questions:
It looks like an IDS system, Big Cabinet with LOTS of cards..... About 8 CO cards and 8 Extension cards with a punchdown panel of a couple 2-3 feet of spagetti. Don't know what other cards are in it, and don't understand all the acronymsss. but It looks over 95% complete with power supply, lots of phones, extra opx boxes etc... I see ebay has LOTS of studd VERY reasonable for these units, so do I take the leap of faith and install it? Is it too old to mess with? and will it support newer things like voicemail, and auto attendant??? We are a company of 10-20 people and need 20-30 extensions.... but will grow to double that in the next 2-3 years (I hope!)
2. Where do I get manuals?
3. How do I program it? Via RS-232 and laptop? I'm an it guy so getting this connected via rs-232 wouldn't be a problem or can I program everything i need fromthe phones?
What the HECK are all the acronyms??? I know what KSU is, but OPX? LSI? 108Cards? VCM Cards? EDCM Card? SLI Card? IDS-OPX Interface Box?
Wolly crap!!! I thought PC's had a LOT of acronyms!!
Please Help!!

More Thoughts,,, It does have some digital voice announcer boxes with it??? Are these auto attendants?
But it has NO TERMINAL! Is this an issue? Can I connect and program via a Laptop? that would be more convienent, that way I put a box next to it wunning XP Pro, setup Remote Desktop and terminal emulation, and BAM... connect via ethernet anywher on my network..... This is feasible right?

My best recommendation is that you hire a telecom guy (or gal) to figure this out. It's a bit beyond the scope of this board to provide instructions in the degree of detail that you'd need. There is a link at the top of this page that may get you to a manual. Good luck! Mike

Ok, Maybe we should start simple then....
Is this system worth installing? and spending thousands to get up and running...

Well, the IDS has been discontinued for six years or so. There is no factory support available. That said, I really like the IDS. We support them regularly and they perform very well - doing things that the new stuff just can't.
Thousands to get up and running? Depends on how many phones you actually need. A tech that knows the IDS could probably make the system operate and get 20 phones running in a day. If that costs thousands, I'm in the wrong market. Understand that you many own many parts that are not necessary for your applicaion. REALLY depends how you need system to work. If you had an Atlas IIe and were satisfied with its function, the IDS will be fine. Mike

Ok, then... I will move forward with this system at least to see if I can get it running or not...
If I us terminal emulation on a laptop to program, and setup a remote desktop connection to it, is there someone here that can program it up for us, for a fee of coarse?

One more question... I saw on ebay this setup
Executone DVX 4 port Voice Mail System
can this be used to add voicemail capability? That would really be nice, the Atlas IIe had voicemail....if this isn't the right box, what box can be used to add voicemail.... probably need 4 ports

Like Mike said above...it would benefit you greatly to get someone locally to look over the IDS and let you know if you have what you need, like voicemail already, and if it is a good system, maybe be toast as well. There are many Executone trained technicians across the country and I'll bet quite a few in your area. Depending on the existing infrastructure and the IDS equipment your looking at anywhere from a day to a day and a half. Get someone to come out and give you an estimate and let him/her give you a crash course on simple servicing and get yourself a manual...then off you go! I will refrain from IT judgement for now!

DVX voicemail is not supported on IDS 108 and larger - which you appear to have. Requires Televideo 950 terminal emulation to program. Has a modem for remote access. Mike

Ok, I got it powered up, all the extensions punched down and checked and punched down the incoming lines.... Now I am at the programming stage... Specifically,
How do I HARD reset this box? I don't have the terminal...
If I use terminal emulation to connect, is this the jack on the CPU card (rj-45) like the manual says? there is only one RJ-45 jack on the cpu card, and I also don't have the optional breakout panel for I/O :-((
