Aloha from the Big Island and thanks in advance for any help.

I have a new (to me) WE 2565 HK (1968) and I just plugged it into my 551 KSU. My KSU is fine and so are any and all phonesets i plug in at this location.

The new 2565 has no lamps lighting (they do light in another phone) and the hold key does not put the call on hold, it disconnects.

Any suggestions?

Sounds like your A/A1 leads could be open. Check the white/orange pair. Open the set, find those two wires and jump them out. With the phone off hook and the first line key depressed, does the line light?

If not, try jumping out a lamp ground (white green wire) to the orange white and see if it lights.

Let us know what you find.

Bump it up to 150% so you can read it easily.

Start at the lower third of page 3. Look for the A1 ground lead (or/w) at the left edge of the schematic.

You need to trace the A1 ground from the source (the KSU) on the orange/white lead, through the mounting cord, then into the set.

Do you have a DVM that you can use to check for ground?

With one lead of the meter on battery (-24 v) take the other meter lead and check for ground at terminal 1B on the line key.

Then make sure that the switch hook lead (either yellow or slate-white) is on terminal 1B. Then with the set off-hook, look for ground at the next point, which is terminal N. There should be a switch hook lead there, too. (It will be either a brown or a slate-green lead.)

Then check for ground at the next place, terminal M, which feeds A1 ground to line keys 1, 2 and 3. Terminal X is connected internally to terminal M, and it feeds A1 ground to line keys 4 and 5.

If all the leads are in the right place, then you either have a switch hook contact that's not making, or the Hold key "break" contacts are out of adjustment or dirty.

Has been a busy week here with the Ironman Championships and full time work. I just dont have a lot of time with my hobby.

Thanks for the great help. I think my hold key must be dirty or out of adjustment because everything else checks good. Is this something I can remedy?

This set may have had problems since '68 as it has no wear on it at all. Probably was thrown in a box somewhere long ago.

The light works fine when i jump them, even puts the call on hold.

Not sure why the lights dont work on their own.

I am getting a new 2565 so maybe I will just use the nice green shell on the new one.

Nice to see you're alive and well. Often people stop by and we never hear from them again.

Can you do something to fix the set? Sure. The hold key, when depressed should open a normally closed contact. If you've got another set, open the two of them and compare. The contact can be cleaned with a dollar bill or readjusted (delicately!) with a set of needle nose pliers. (There are custom tools for cleaning and adjusting, but in a pinch...)
