For residential you have a point and there are other providers in the same boat like cable company telephone. If a business has a T1 or PRI they will have the same problem.
People are going to have to realize that this isn't the "old days" when your telephones kept working even during power failures and blackouts. I agree, that's not a good thing but unfortunately it's progress- I guess.

In some situations (a blackout for instance) cell phones could be utilized.

Unfortunately if the situation is more than localized cell phone networks get overloaded and won't handle calls.

We install a good deal of PON equipment for businesses. All the units have a battery back-up that lasts at least 8 hours. It's not the same security as the copper lines we install, but it beats anything the cable company has, and is a good deal more stable. It's not as rock solid as POTS, but as Hal said, this ain't like the good old days anymore.
Sometimes the thoughts in my head get so bored, they go for a stroll through my mouth. This is rarely a good thing.

As far as eliminating the 100 meter "tether" on a LAN, we've done that for years with fiber to the desktop. Most of the switches I've installed in business LANs here in the city have been fiber fed. The big holdup in the spread of FTTD has been the cost of fiber optic NICs.
But, like Hal said, it's about time. The more these things get used the cheaper the price will be. fiber IS the technology of the 21st century. Not that there won't be a place for copper. Of course there will be, but you'll see more and more FTTD.

Sam, you the man..... :thumb: I have people use the "I can always use my cell phone" nonsense when I require an UPS for a system. I do a lot of government work and still they don't think of the disaster requirements. I was trained not only by the Bell System, but the military and civilian disaster preparedness people...the forerunner of the Homeland Defense Anti-Terrorism department. You NEVER put all your eggs in one basket....maybe that is why I hate VoIP systems...true VoIP leaves you totally venerable in case of disaster. In the "real world" FTTD is the best bet....but in reality fiber between comm closets and the server with gig on copper to the desk is the interim way to speed things up. And, yes, fiber is still the most secure way of transmitting data (or voice) but the easiest to destroy if it is not protected. Again, all your eggs in one basket. My two cents.........

I remember about 10 years ago when the norm was 10 baseT ethernet, 100 baseT switches and NICs were very expensive. Now you would be hard pressed to find anything else except 1000.
