I have been working with a client that is using a vodavi XTS-IP single cabinet.

We ordered a phone from ebay and hooked them up. That phone automatically got Extension 113. I am trying to change this extionsion number to 222 or something alone those lines.

I have tryed using a a null modem cable and was not able to access the system via a laptop by just plugging it up(I am also scared to flip dip switch 8 because the manual poorly written and makes it sound like it will reset the system to default). Is there something I am missing trying to access the system via laptop, All I have tryed is plugging it up - and starting the admin software (and I get nothing).

What I am wondering now is there a way to create a new extension from the Operator phone, then use 636222 on the new phone to change the extension from 113 to 222. If this is possible, please tell me what I would press on the operator phone. The operator phone is a "24 button executive phone" \

Thanks in Advance for any help what-so-ever.

Not to sound rude, but it sounds like you have never worked on the XTS system and if that is the case you are in over your head and need to find a local Vertical/Vodavi dealer to give you a hand or someone here may chime in to assist you remotely via dial up for a fee.

If you are trying to program the system from a laptop there is no actual ADMIN software it is a terminal program that you use unless you are using WinDba.

I have one suggestion to you and that is DO NOT flip that dip switch 8 or your customer probably will not be happy with you!!

Yes, You are correct.. I have never worked with an xts system.. this thing came out before I was born it seems like. I have worked with Avaya systems but this thing is analog.

The company said the last guy used a software GUI to program it last time. The software is titled "ADMIN" I have included a screen shot of what I'm referring to. Does this pic look familiar or is this for a completely different system?

Thanks for the advice about DS8, and I am aware we could hire someone - But I work in IT here and they want to avoid paying someone else.

The documentation I have on this phone system is about the worst help file I've ever seen come with something that at one time cost a good bit of money.

Does anyone have any tips besides hire someone? I mean, experience does matter by all means.. but there was a time in that techs life where he had no clue as well.

^^^Pic from the documentation, Everything is greyed out when I try to use it.

That software GUI is for a Vodavi Voicemail system.

As far as programming it from the operator phone if you have a manual its in there. For me to give you steps in this forum is prohibited because it is not an end user function.

As for your knock on the XTS system, those are very solid systems and to someone that has been trained on it and VERY VERY flexible and customer accommodating to say the least you just have to know how to program it. I hope you don't think I'm being rude but telephony is a livelihood for most of us just like IT is to you.

It appears you have the software for the voice-mail system, not the phone system.

Yes, you can program an extension for a digital phone (the system is not analog).

That phone system was very reliable, feature rich, and one of the most customize-able I've ever worked with. Unless you're under 6, you were alive when it was made.

smile You might not want to bash the product that many people made a living working with, when coming here to ask how to do their jobs. smile

If you want to do it yourself, you'll need to find a manual for the phone system, not just the voice-mail. The rules of the board do not allow us to post step-by-step instructions for admin level programming.

Guys I didn't mean to "bash" the phone system.. Its just not the best out there in my honest opinion (the reason we have it is because it was the cheapest we could find). In larger company's i've worked for.. the phones worked with mac addresses, were tied into the security system, had very user friendly web interface's (this does not even have a port for a rj45.. I think that because we dont have the MPBI2 - I ask myself "why is that even an addon and not standard in 2006), etc, So for some reason I thought this was analog

And by no means am I bashing you personally, I'm frustrated and asking for help because I feel like I should be able to figure this out.

I'm looking at the wrong documentation.. This is what my boss gave me - he said the last tech we hired outside of the company left this when he was finished. So that makes me feel a little better.

I have not been able to find an admin manual and we bought this phone system used - with no documentation. All I can find is Installation and Station user guide.

I'm sure the company would pay someone to help me over the phone or instant messenger since this board does not allow for you to tell me. But the last guy took 2 days, used our laptop and charged over $600.. so they are a little hesitant and ive also asked them to give me a chance.
