I’m a big fan of Customer Location Alternate Routing (CLAR) from AT&T. For 4 bucks a month, they provide the service where you can instantly reroute your number from any phone, especially your cell phone. Works with any type of number, and you can have multiple destinations pre-programmed and ready to go.
As we found out during the storms here, providers weren’t necessarily able to initiate disaster routing because of network and personnel issues. I wouldn’t depend on a DR plan that requires any intervention by the carrier.
Not sure that would have worked with the scenario I explained.
The carrier (AT&T) decided on their own to put a recorded message on the customer's number stating that the customer was no longer in service, then gave (4) options to choose from of businesses that did the same service in the surrounding area.
If the line had been a SIP line, there would have been no problem.
