Yep, I have a straight through cable with a null modem dongle and multiple gender changers. For most everything it's works save very few instances.

Is there anyway I can use Hyperterminal to at least see if any data can be received?

Update: I've ordered another serial cable that's specifically labeled as a straight through cable. If that doesn't work, then I have no choice but to call it quits with the voicemail system. I've put the NEC system away for now and put my MLX phones back out until the new serial cable gets here.
I'll post my results here with the new cable when it arrives so that the Google lurkers and forum members alike can benefit from the troubleshooting and results.
Thanks all,
Scott

Ok so I have to make a point here and that is that you are documenting only your failure to connect to a voicemail that techs all over the world connect to regularly. As such you are not taking into account the possibility that the RS232 port on the card you are dealing with may be damaged. So the fact that you have not connected may not be due to anything you have or have not tried, but to the fact that you could never have connected to it anyway! The danger of not saying this is that someone googling this in the future may give up because you tried something and didn't succeed when if they tried it, it may well work.
If you were here saying you had a cable and software that had previously worked with another card, then we could be sure of what we say but there are too many unknowns here for a definitive answer. The card may be faulty or you could have something wrong on your side. Any negative result on your part does not confirm anything. Sorry but that is just a fact and it would mislead anyone googling this thread to leave this unsaid!

OK....if you feel like playing with this try this... On a lot of elite mails, the internal modem is 663 ... so set your #3 switch to on for internal modem ...get a modem attached to your pc .set up a dial string in cosessions to do vm pilot several commas and 663. My setup is 19200 8N1. support and voice. On mine: Pilot is 199. my dial string is 199,,,,,,663
On my accounts, I try to put an analog line at the MDF so I can can leave switch 3 to modem but easily connect when I am onsite. Shrug ... something to try

@R4+Z: I agree 100%! Thank you! @MandoRon: I don't have an analog telephone card on my system, so I presume you mean that I will be calling in via a "PSTN" trunk (just an analog line on my Legend system) and then transferring the call to extension 663? Otherwise I'm unsure of how else this would work, unless the modem auto-answers all calls into the system when the dip switch three is set to on. Can you clarify there? I know the modem in the Windows 95 PC works because I used it to transfer those screenshots I posted so this is definitely something else I'd like to try until the new serial cable gets here. @paulw: If possible, could you please PM me what I should be using? Thanks. Thank you all for the continued support and input! V/r, Scott

Remember to reset the card after changing that switch setting. It will not be recognized without a card reset.

One trick I use for a non indial system is to send a setup string to the modem ATX=0 this stops the modem looking for dial tone. you can then parallel a phone with the modem and you just store one digit as the dial number. You then ring into the system using the phone and when answered you ask the person to transfer the call to the modem number. As soon as they start the transfer start the modem dialing and hang up the phone. The modem will dial the one digit (which does nothing) and then start trying to talk to the far end modem which by now should have answered and the two will start communicating.
This should give you a way to dial in using the modem and bypass the need for a cable, assuming you know the modem number and the switches are set correctly.
