I just read an interesting article in my weekend edition of the NY POST or DAILY NEWS, they seem to be the same these days.....

It discussed what NYC would be like in 2025. This brought me to an interesting post to start, what do you see as the state of business communications in about 10 years?

Will there be a desk top phone on every desk in businesses all over?

Will everything be Internet-Based or Wireless?

Or will it be Fiber Based, Copper Based....or will be even be around........

I believe more and more things will be going wireless. The other side of our company does tower work for several local carriers, and there are some interesting things in the works for your cell phone. They are changing out nearly all of thier transmitters, and almost doubling the number of tower sites. If they are making such an investment in our relativly small market, they must really expect things to trend even more to cell phone, wirless PDA's etc. I know there is alot of hype about VOIP, but who needs it if all your employees has a Cell phone, wireless internet access and the works?

I see wireless growing more than voip, at least with my customers.voip has not taken off in this area like they were saying it would.

Copper is losing to wireless already. More and more people are opting for a cell phone rather than a wired phone in their houses and apartments.

I always predicted that at some point all consumer phone service will be wireless.

i am focusing my topic on Business Telephone Systems, yeah wireless cell phones for consumers...but what will the Business Desktop phone be in 10 years....

Perhaps the desk phone will still be wired but maybe a little box in the back room providing 20 or so wirless lines to replace POTs or PRI circuits connected to the KSU.

I wouldn't even have a phone line at home if I didn't need DSL. No cable access here & wireless sucks. As far as business I think everything will be some sort of cell technology. I know if they had a cell that had multiple lines and some of the features of pbx's there would be a big move to them. Right now they are focused on personal use and not business yet. If they can put a camera & gps in a phone it wont be long before they have everything else in that little thing.

Depending on your area, wireless to the desktop seems the new catch-all. VoIP is the ISDN of the 00s. Some places it's great, some places it ism't. There are a couple of vendors out there already mixing and matching wireless to the desk top with convential sets.
The wireless office will only work so far ---- re: when the Towers came down, What DID work? Out here in the sticks, forget it. Just another James Bond movie prop.

I think there will be all kinds of different desk top phones avaliable. Everything from the standard digital to a wireless that converts to a desktop when you arrive at the office.

I can see you being able to pick it up out of the cradle to leave select it for off site use and it converts to cell usage.

But my feelings are these are for the larger money spendning companys. I see the average user sticking to the standard desktop with a softphone on the laptop for wireless use over the internet.
