New entrance terminal and new underground cable to a new building on campus. Are the protection modules in the terminal direction sensitive? Does it matter which side of the terminal the UG cable goes to? I think I know but would like to hear it from someone else to confirm.
I should be protecting the pbx, so the inside cable to the switch should be on the output of the terminal? And the UG on the input. And do the same at the other end of the UG, so the UG is always on the input, and the equipment and phones to protect are always on the output side.
Thank you. Jim

I never looked but I believe they are symmetrical. So, no, it shouldn't make any difference. But the terminals have an in and out which is what I paid attention to.

Now that I think about it, some protectors have one side marked "protected side". Perhaps the electronics in the module are polarity sensitive and the ground pin is connected accordingly. I think I'm over-analyzing this and starting to doubt myself. My wife says I make things more difficult than they need to be.

They are not polarity sensitive. If they were, a reversed pair would foul things up.
The long pins get connected to the OSP. The short pins get connected to the subscriber equipment. The middle pin is ground. If you wire the BET correctly, the modules will be facing the correct direction. The ground pin is off-set to prevent the module from being inserted incorrectly. Most BET's have a wiring diagram that indicates which cable goes where, Some have a cable tail. Those are easy to figure out. The tail gets spliced to the OSP.

Exactly, plus you'll notice that one pair of pins has an indentation that permits the module to be partially inserted. This enables you to disconnect the station side (short pins) from the circuit, while keeping the OSP pair and ground intact for maintained protection. They thought of everything in the design of those things.

And there is the nutshell comment. They designed EVERYTHING the right way, and now, it's an industry that's going to be forgotten in two generations.

I heard that Apple is going to incorporate 5 pin protectors in the next iPhone so they won't be damaged by Millennials who are too stupid to stop texting and go inside during a thunder storm. -Hal
