Recommendations for a hybrid system is good advice. Don't rule out VoIP entirely or even Windows based systems.

For all the talk about reliability there are some very good systems to look in to: AltiGen and Vonexus just two of my favorites. Vonexus is a 100% VoIP system and AltiGen can be analog, VoIP, or hybrid.

Both have proven to be very reliable in my experience. Both connect to your carrier's analog lines or T1/PRI, so loosing broadband connectivity is a non-issue, insomuch as any other traditional telephone system would be, since we're not talking about a Vonage-type VoIP service.

Both systems are easily managed through simple interfaces and any minimal maintenance would typically be performed after hours like any other server.

Also, for what it's worth, I've not heard many positive experiences regarding 3Com or Cisco VoIP solutions...at least not except from their own marketing efforts!

Wow, I didn't expect to see so many comments here, thank you to all who responded. Just for clarity, we're not looking for VoIP end-to-end, we still plan to go out over a PRI.

A windows-based system like the Vertical TeleVantage just seems like a bad idea to me. Despite being a Windows shop, I like the idea of a phone system not having all that Windows overhead.

I suppose in the end, we'll go with a hybrid solution as it allows everything we need without complication. Although, if the 3com v3000 is competitively priced even with switch upgrading (as we're due for an upgrade anyhow), it'll be a tough choice.

Thank you for all of your comments!
