Hi Ed I wasn't 110% sure about how many pairs were actually required. "4 conductors, straight through" looked a little off so I went back and found 2 earlier posts that confirmed that units were shipped with 8 conductor cabling.

My bad dexman, I correct it. I meant pairs. My brain and fingers don't always do the same thing.

So it's a 1030, that makes sense. Why would an Intertel GLX be better than a Merlin? More features, easier to maintain?

I'd say that moving from an old Inter-tel GLX to an old Merlin is a major step sideways. I don't see ANY benefit other than old Merlin phones are probably easier to find. Merlin is also easier to program - mostly because it does so little. Don't get me wrong - Merlin is a great product, however unless you're trying to fix a problem, I wouldn't change just for the sake of change... Mike

The problem is that the Inter-Tel broke down once (power supply) and I have ben having a TOUGH time finding phones that can work with it. Ebay is a joke, GLX phones go for big bucks. Merlins are cheap, common and made in USA My main system is a 1A2 so the electronic key phones are just a companion and a convenient way to use speakerphones. Actually I am planning on adding 4 more 1a2 extensions and today did a clean out job of a communications closet which has supplied me with a whole bunch of 25 pair cable. Local phone guys like the work, I make some cash and get supplies, it's a win-win situation!

I like the Merlin better. It's basic telephone module supports rotary phones and even rings them with it's external ringing power supply. The keysets are better looking, the control unit doesn't get as hot as the Inter-Tel and the phones are cheaper. It would be possible to integrate 1a2 with Merlin, something that Inter-Tel GLX can't do. Only bad thing about Merlin- that 4 pair wiring.
