I have a lucent partner plus syastem. It is supposed to hook up to a printer or a lucent device to track and log calls. Can I connect the SMDR port directly to a computer, and with a program log calls?

Yes, that's the way it works.

I think you will need to use a 355A adapter in order to connect a printer or computer to the SMDR jack.

Ok, so good I can hook it up. I have an older windows 98 machine (I also have a xp, but would prefer to use the old for this job). I hook the system up to the CPU via a cat5 cable, then what? I am assuming I need a program of some sort (any recomendations), and I am assuming I have to configure the ethernet connection somehow (maybe the program will do that).

The 8 pin SMDR port is not an ethernet port, it is a serial port. You will need the adapter dexman mentioned (or if you search the forum, there is information on how to build your own modified version)
Once it is connected to a serial port on your computer, you can run your perfered terminal emulation program to see the call data scroll across the screen. To make more sense of it, you would need to purchase some form of call accounting software.

It's NOT ethernet. It's a serial RS-232. Read what Dexman said above about a 355A adaptor to convert the 8 pin on the processor to a 14 pin serial.
You can use Hyperterminal after that but to make the information useful Google "call accounting software".

The set up is this:
355 Adapter to the SMDR Port, and usually to the Computer you will also need a 9 pin to 25 Pin adapter as well.
The Hyperterm, or what ever communication program you use should be set for 1200, N 8 & 1.
That's 1200 BAUD, No Stop Bits 8 Data Bits and 1 Parity bit.

Yes, you can use a regular patch cord.

Ok so I have the 355A adapter. I connect a patch cable (cat5) to the SMDR jack, and that to the 355A adapter. I have a serial port on the back of my computer that is the same size. Do I just plug that in or do I need an adapter for that?
