I stopped into a store today while I was out doing some jobs. The power was out so they had no phones. Of course, they did not have a regular phone connected so they could still get calls. I am assuming the easiest thing to do is just install another jack and connect it right to their first line. Are there any power failure provisions on this system?

No, the only external options on that system were external paging, music on hold, etc. No PFT, so your concept of a parallel jack on line #1 is about the best you can do.

Install a jack on Line 1, ahead of the Merlin, tell them NOT to plug a phone into it except when the power is out (otherwise it will interfere with normal operation of the Merlin phones)
You could always get an 8-pin cord coupler, pull Line 1 and an extension out of the control unit and couple them together. Disconnect the Merlin phone, and plug a single line into the jack instead.
And if you do install a jack, rememeber to do it on your own time, charging full boat, or if you do it on hardware store time, they provide EVERYTHING, including the tools, wire, and jack.

My bad. I was thinking that the original question was asking if the Merlin phones could be used to cover power failure transfer situations.
BTW, I completely forgot about the type III cartridge.

Probably wouldn't hurt to recommend a UPS with a runtime as much as they can afford. That way they won't have to worry about all of that for anything but prolonged outages.

Another piece of hardware the customer has to worry about...the rj11 jacks is the only sure power failure solution.
