Keep in mind that an old fax machine won't function very well as a fax machine on an IP-based network...

Problem resolved. Tim Alberstein really wanted to tackle this problem and he came through and discovered some interesting things. One, outboud calls were being logged into the SMDR when nobody was there. It happend when we were there at night and nobody placed a call, but just picked up an extension. Looking at the SMDR log was something I never would have done. But boy did I learn something.

Tim discovered more off entries in the hardware log plus the presence of numerous 840F LOST IDLE MESSAGE ERRORs. After hours of experimenting over several visits and board swaps it was traced back to a suspected short in a cable that fed two phones. The customer never reported trouble with those phones, they just disconnected them and forgot about it. It was only when we finally unplugged the connections from the switch that the errors disappeared and things began to make sense. It was a small matter of luck we stumbled on that but come to think about it, probably it should have been the first thing to have considered. That was complicated though by the customer not reporting the trouble with the two extensions.

So bottom line - bad cable. It was quite a challenge and required about 20 man hours to finally resolve. Tim would not quit, he was like a man possessed. You want him on your side when you've got stubborn problems to fix. I'd give him a star if he already didn't have 5.

did you happen to see what slot your "lost idle
message error" came from??? I've never seen a
defective set or the wiring to the set cause those type of errors????. I still don't see how
your defective wiring affected the in & out bound
calling issue...which what you started this forum
with???
I hope you did solve your problem...it can get
time consuming and expensive.

As you found out there is great support on this board. You can still rate Tim 5 I'm sure he would appreciate it. :toast:
