How do you associate a dos programming file to Hyper Term. using XP Pro? this is driving me nuts. It's for programming Telrad Digitals.

Telrad remote software that brings up the files in DOS mode, I have it on lap tops now with 98 second edition which as you know has the DOS prompt. I would like to see if I could put it on my desktop so I can dial in and help out my tech when he has something he doesn't understand. My desktop has XP Pro and when I try to dial in from the exe file it goes in ok but shuts down after the Telrad modem answers. I can however dial in on the Hyper Term and it will answer but then I have no way to associate the file to look at the program and modify, change, save. Hope this makes sense I have been told that I can't do it but I don't give up that easily.

Setup a dual boot system on your desktop. If you really want to get fancy, boot to multiple OS's including DOS. I have that on a couple of my machines. Don't need to use if very often, but when I do, it sure is handy. If you set up another OS like Win 98, it won't need that much space provided you don't load anything big on it. If you want more info on how to set it up, let me know.

Well hold on, let's see if we can't set this up in XP.
Do this.
Go to Start > Run and run the command cmd.
That should give you a "dos" prompt.
Go ahead and CD to your desktop, or better yet (for ease of this) copy the TELRAD program to your hard drive root directory (ie. c:\telrad.exe) that way you don't have to fish around for it in the command promt (more than likely your desktop directory in XP is c:\documents and settings\your user name\desktop).
Anyhow.
After you're in the directory for the telrad program, go ahead and type it at the command prompt and run it (ie. telrad.exe and then enter).
Let it do it's thing, and regenerate that problem (where it connects and then the program closes). Instead of closing the window, it should keep the window open and HOPEFULLY provide us with an error message. See if you get an error message and let me know what it is.

Ok I will try that, I have thought of putting Dos or 98 sec. on the other drive. But I'll try the XP first and get the error code. I'll post what I get.
Thanks Russ

It connects with the system and stays connected but all I get is a 3 in the window and can't do anything else. It should say Connected online and bring up the menu.

a 3?
Explain that a bit better for me.
What happens when you hit CTRL-C after it locks?

It calls the Telrad then connects and gives me a 3 with the blinking curser after the 3, It then is unresponsive to anything. CTRL-C has no effect at all. I then have to just shut it down.
I think if there was a way to force the Telrad remote software to use the Hyperterm upon opening the program it could possibly work but that is where the problem lies.

Ok sorry to sound stupid, let me figure this out...
When you log in with Hyper Term, what do you get? Does telrad's PBX systems just use a terminal emulation? That way you don't have to use any software at all?
If CTRL-C doesn't break it, then it's locking up with XP, meaning that something's not going right with the interaction there, so you're going to have to find a solution. Have you tried contacting Telrad? I know that seems simple... and there isn't a windows release of their software?
Again, if all the telrads do is use terminal emulation, then why can't you use hyper terminal by itself?
Lucent/Avaya products do... Nortel as well on some of their switches.

DTMF The softwares 3.10, 5.10, 6.10 are windows compliant. and should run with XP. When I call in again I will ask Tech Support of any changes that need to be made.

SS, I'm trying to do it with 7.0 for a couple of 400 systems, AvayaNovice, The Telrad has to use the software to talk to the system, each release is different so you have to use the correct ver. for the system you are trying to connect with , if it doesn't see or talk with the software then it's a no go. It's a DOS based program that you load to your hard drive and it then explodes all the files, you then open the DKEYBX file and dial in directly to the in-system modem or dial in to the voice mail and transfer your self to the modem then you have to enter the file name for that system a it will open up the programming session where you can change , back up, load new program ect. ect. So you see it has to be able to talk to the system with the software. Damn that was a mouth full Added: I have all my customers ver. and files on my laptops so it's not any kind of emergency, I would just like to get them all on my XP (it would be really handy) Maybe I should just go ahead and load another OS (win98 sec.) to it and that will let me run them all. I have space up the (you know what)I've got two drives C: 60GB and F: has 20GB so that isn't an issue. O yea AvayaNovice, the new software is all window based and very nice to work with. I think 7.23 and above. [This message has been edited by dtmf (edited August 01, 2003).]

Interesting, I get what you're saying now.
So that's weird, the newer versions aren't backwards compatible with other switches?
Interesting...
Yeah I guess you're going to have to set up a Dual Boot. You can use XP to do it, or you can buy/steal a third party boot loader.
Kinda sucks that you have to do that...
I would say use a DOS emulator, but the IRQ and port settings compatibility on those is screwy.
