Today I found out I had a virus and decided I was going to reformat my HD. I dug up all my driver cd's and back ups along with my Windows XP disk. Well have a problem with the certificate of authenticity number. I wrote the number down on the cd sleeve and it is now missing. The sticker that used to be on the side of the tower was lost when I rebuilt the pc and got a new case. I was wondering if that number is somewhere on my HD in a file or something that will allow me to get it back so I can do a fresh install? Thanx in advance!

If you can't find the number, you might be SOL.
You can pickup another OEM version of XP Home edition for less than $100.
Try www.newegg.com

This will do the trick for you on finding the keycode.
A word of caution, though: Microsoft will only let you activate the same copy of Windows XP every 120 days. What I have done is, after the initial install and activation, I cloned the hard drive and mothballed the clone. That way, if I have a major crash, it's easier to rebuild the system.

Not sure if the registry structure is exactly the same in XP, but if you can still access your registry, try looking in
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion.

The Product Key should be around the same place as the Product ID, which is the number reported in Control Panel|System|General

Best of luck!

Thanks for the input fellas. The keyfinder program did the trick. Nice tool by the way.
