I have a used IBM Thinkpad laptop that I use for telecom interfaces & this is my problem...
My OS is WIN2003 & on a "cold" start it will lock up during the WIN2003 banner screen where the progress bar just stops. Forcing a shut down or a "hot" start, ie, when it has been shut down for a short priod of time, it boots right up.

Personally, I'd go back to Win2000 or XP. Sounds more like hardware incompatibility with 2003.

Convert to Windows XP. If you need more info, PM me. I actually just posted Windows XP and Office XP for sale in the equipment catagory.

You might wnat to uninstall the service pack you installed just prior to the lockups starting. If you go to Start Menu-->Settings-->Control Panel-->Add/Remove Programs you should see any installed service packs or hot fixes.
Unfortunately, lockups at startup can be hard to trouble-shoot, though I'm assuming at some point you can actually get to the Windows desktop.
Also, you'll want to check the Event Viewer to see if there is any clues there. That can be found in the Administrative Tools control panel.
Sometimes you carpe diem, sometimes your diem gets carped.

If you can't get to the desktop, press F8 during bootup and go to safe mode.

Yes, Steve, I always get there, after a forced shut-down, then immediatly press the power on button again. Only once did it not boot-up. I happened to be on a customer site and that was'nt fun...
Thanx for your response, however, I will look into the event viewer.
