A customer of mine has a data t-1 that does not give them the amount of bandwidth they need. The customer called ATT and they told the customer they could increase their bandwidth to 3meg with no router config or the use of an additional t-1 circuit. My customer signs the agreement and the next thing you know ATT is there to install the second t-1, which of course means an addition NIM card and more config on the router. My customer gets po'd and cancels the install. They are now asking me what to do. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. I need to get these guys up to 3 meg a lot sooner than later.

Thanks

Brian

Well, you could do DSL, but they probably won't be happy with that if they're use to a T-1 with a higher upload rate.

Some electrical/utility companies have a fiber ring that they use to sell high bandwidth to businesses so, you may want to check with them. Same goes for Cable TV companies.

If that doesn't work, you can see if the LEC can provide fiber. Otherwise, you'll have to install an additional T-1. You can't get past 1.5 on a single T-1.

Try someone like NuVox, someone like them that furnishes "bundled" dynamic IP T-1s. 1, 2, or 3 Ts. By using the IP "stretch" and "flex" of the dynamic IP they can meet demand. Not cheap but should do what you want.

To really answer this question, you should let us know what the customer is doing with this T1. Are they hosting any incomming services?

PS. Have pioneer days returned?

The customer uses the link to allow the connection to 4 of their remote showrooms. The main campus houses their servers and the remotes tie to the main via data t-1's. Not pt to pt.With the addition of the 4th store, they are taxing the existing circuit.

Pioneer days are not what they used to be.

Sounds like a VPN is currently in place? Not something I'd want considering how inexpensive it would be to do a frame relay between sites.

Anyway, reviewing all you've said, the obvious choice is to add the second T1 from ATT and deal with the added costs for the wic card and router configuration. I mean, ATT supports MLPPP right? Shouldn't be too difficult to convert a single T1 wan to a MLPPP wan.

If you want to go a step further, request that ATT do diverse paths on the lec T1s to prevent a mux or dacs card failure from taking both circuits down.

Years ago, Tellabs manufactured T1 compression units. They allowed you to take 2 T1s back in the Central Office mux them together into a single T1 pipe, and then demux them back into 2 T1s out at the customer premise.

We had a few customers who used them and they worked reasonably well for us. But no tears were shed when the last customer had us remove the unit from his office.

Thanks for the assistance. Ordered up the t1 today and set them up with a router guy to bond them. BH
