Customer needs cable from DID to Router and I have not seen a T-1 NID like this. RJ48c plug .... T1/HDSL { CKT1} RJ48s Plug .... Data/DDS {CKT1} This was put up by Verizon and is labled Verizon.I was called out because the Verizon guy did not wish to crawl under the building and get dirty per the customer. How do I wire a Cat 5 Cable to the NID when there are 2 RJ48 plugs,1 is labled C and the other is labled S. Any help would be appreciated as all T-1 connections I have done in the past had only 1 plug at the NID. Thanks for any advice.

Put a loop plug in them and see which one causes the NID to sync.

RJ-48C uses pins 1&2 & 4&5 RJ-48S used pins 1&2 & 7&8 So it depends on which type of jack the customer's equipment at the far end requires. Both of the jacks in the NID are wired to the same card slot.

Nice to know, thanks. Only question is why wouldn't they use the T-1 wiring standard that's been around for years? 1&2 7&8 have been used for 4 wire data for the same period of time.

Guess I should have just checked my RJ reference before posting anything. Still don't know why they'd want a non-standard T-1 pin out. You could always fix the equipment plug if it were non-standard for some reason.

RJ-48S pins 1&2 & 7&8 are for DDS service... 9.6 Kb to 64 Kb DDS. (in other words DS0's.)
I don't even know that for a T1, a customer COULD even order RJ-48S on it. The standard NID housing ARE labeled with BOTH due to the housings being used for either/or and are switch selecatable... but the cards that fit into the housing would NOT be pinned out that way.

Thanks Bryan, that makes sense now. I didn't think it would make sense to have two wiring pinouts for T-1 when the standards been there forever.
