This may sound like a elementary question but, what do I need to install to get gigabit Ethernet connections. Is cat5e rated for that, or do I need to install cat6? The cat5e from Leviton claims 1000baseT connections and beyond. Is that gigabit?

5e at a minimum. However, we recently used some exsiting 5, pulled in 12 years ago, and everything came up fine on 1gb. We did explain to the customer that there may be a need to change out the wiring if we encountered to many errors and to our liking none so far.

Besides having an intact wiring infrastructure, your switches and nic's need to be 10/100/1000 compliant!

As long as your wiring is solid and all the jacks are punched down solid and you don't have an EMI problem, cat5e will work fine 99% of the time for Gig-E

(All of the switches need to have gigE ports of course) If you want to go up to 10Gig-E, I'd recomend either using fiber, or putting in cat6 wiring with hardware (jacks, etc) that are 10Gig-E compliant. When it comes to 10Gig-E STP cat6 cable is a very good idea... again Fiber would be my choice.

Right now the cost of setting up for 10Gig-E is pricey... and simple Gig-E is fine for most applications (Aside from core routers and switches if there is massive data passing through)

If you have any questions, I'd be happy to help answer the specifics. Feel free to contact me!
