I know this subject has multiple threads, but I haven't been able to find an answer. I understand it is possible to use Ghost to backup the hard drive
on the DX-80 vm. Do you remove the drive from the board? What type of interface does it have? Any insight would be greatly appreciated. We have a few customers with these and they seem to die alot.

They are IDE drives. If you or your company do not have the knowledge, skills, ability in this area I would strongly suggest you partner with someone who does!

I hadn't seen the vm card in a while. The customer contacted us about buying a spare (!) to keep on hand in case it dies again. So it's a standard 40 pin IDE interface?

I'm confused. You have a few customers who have gone thru multiple drives, or you have multiple customers who each have lost a drive?

I'm just not sure, based on the overall age of this system's existence, that "they seem to die a lot" is a fair description. If it is accurate in your case, what type of environment are they in, and what's the power situation for them?

I had just started wondering the same thing. Hard drives do not like moisture, heat, shock, or vibration. If your KSUs are mounted in accordance with the guidelines described in the system manual, there should be nothing too alarming here. And the power supply, as Justin mentioned, is very important. Whether you have flash or hard drive voicemail, power conditioning is a must. A good quality surge / UPS unit should be installed in front of the KSU.

Me, too. We have a DX-80 with 8 port HDD--that was installed in 2003--no problems. We're going to replace it, here, pretty soon, but that many HDDs going out is not normal. Every VM/Phone system installed from us since 1996 has had a UPS on it. We are now replacing the batteries on those UPSs--one by one.
