I never see any splitters grounded to anything, even on cable co. installs. Should the ground lug be connected to copper pipe or is it even necessary?
Also, does only the first splitter in a series need to be grounded?

They only have to be grounded at the point where the cable enters the building. If there's no splitter required, then they just use a grounding block. This is required by the NEC. It's just to bring the cable shield to the same potential as the building's grounding electrode system. The same thing applies to telephone cables if they are shielded.

Ive also seen where someone has grounded the cable in more than one spot. This is wrong; ground only where ev has stated (only one connector), otherwise you could create a "ground loop".

I have heard that Comcast doesn't allow using the splitter as a grounding point and instead wants a ground block to be used instead.
