Our fax machine is on station 133, an analog line which is supposed to pick up dialout 8 group. When the fax grabs the line, we are getting about 1/2 second of internal dial tone before the external dial tone comes in, and that is making the fax cancel the call without even dialing. Is this normal? I am comfortable with the ESI-Admin program with this system but am not an "installer". Where is the setting to tell the analog line to grab an outside line group? Where is the setting to tell a single incoming line (6 in our case) to go to extension 133? Thanks.

If you make the analog extension a "fax" versus a phone you should be fine with outside dial tone....this is in function 3.
Ringing is function 2.....just select line 6 and program it to ring at 133.

The analog extension already said FAX in function 3. I changed extension 132 to be labeled FAX and it still pulled up internal dial tone. There must be some installer function that I can't get to, to make an analog extension grab an outside line. Regarding ringing, I don't have function 2 available, so that set of functions obviously is installer only stuff. Found a workaround: the fax can be set to not check dial tone, just wait 2 seconds then dial. So that's what we're doing.
I tried the default installer password and it didn't work with ESI-Admin. The installer probably changed it. We had them out to fix this dial tone issue, but they haven't been able to. End of story!

And thanks for the help! I do appreciate your response. This is a good phone system, we're well pleased with it.

Does Ext 133 have access to line group 8 only or both 9 & 8? Any other analog devices connected to the 133 port in parallel?
BTW, a half second ain't very long and I would say it to be normal.

Is the line group '8' a centrex line that you are using f221 access dialing the '9'? this will cause a delay in dial tone.
One other silly thought, is the line cord on the fax line plugged in to the correct jack on the back of the fax machine? if you are in the wrong one it will pick up the line then cut itself off.

My initial thought was the same as SST's first question. There is a delay when the system inserts a 9 in front of the dialed digits, to accomodate Centrex-type lines that require users to dial 9 once accessing the outside line.

I agree with posts above. If you have the analog port assigned as a fax with access to trkgrp 8 only. Its perfectly normal for a 1/2 second internal DT before grabbing the trunk. I've installed hundreds with no problems. I may suggest in the fax machine programming, putting in a pause or two before dialing out.
Girls are like phones. They love to be held, talked to.....but if you press the wrong button you'll be disconnected!

You could try having your installer change the ext to a ' Modem ' only if you are not having the Fax line automaticly detected by the auto attendant for inbound use. it ' may ' pick up dial tone quicker than if it's set to FAX.
I can see the light at the end of the tunnel..
