Does anyone know what the maximum usable delay time is for VoIP? Got a customer that wants to use VoIP over satellite internet connection with about 800-900 ms ping time. Would this work or is the delay too much for usable voice quality?

That is massive and unacceptable fr VOIP. I have yet to see a satellite solution with a low enough ping to be acceptable.

That's what I thought. I'll pass it on to the customer.

800-900 is really high for a satellite. should be closer to 500ms, 250 to the satellite and 250 back down to earth. there will be delay and if that is the only way they can get a connection it would be up to them if they could accept the delay, but it would "work". People use it all the time, its not totally out of the question. normally you dont want to go over 150ms. not sure what VOIP solution you were to use, if you could get 4 10ms g.729 speech frames per packet you could cut by half the number of headers you use, with only 20-byte increase in bandwidth.

Yeah, it works. It would work like a slow CB radio.

Trying to sell Toshiba IPT-2020. Works fine for most of their offices, but they have one in BFE that can't get any other type of broadband.

Allworx is now working with the US Government where they will be deploying our systems to the troops over seas, and using Satellite Communications for all of their VoIP needs. The military has extremely high end technology, so they will be able to handle this, where as regular business owners will not.

The boss installed a network camera in one of our other stores that has an IP phone. Camera was set up for full motion video and sucked up most of our bandwidth, ping times were around 800-900 ms and the IP phone still worked. A little choppy, but otherwise OK. I reconfigured the camera so we could actually use the internet, ping times now around 100-150 ms. Guess that answered my original question...
