Our customer has a Toshiba Strata DK PBX with 8 CO & 20 ext. Every month they chalk-up approx $10 to 12K in IDD bills for overseas call (being a trading coy). They are thinking of going VOIP for the cost savings. What is the best way to go (a)change to an IP based PBX (b)Subscribe to a hosted VOIP service (c) connect a VOIP gateway to ther Toshiba Strata DK PBX or (d) other options not mentioned above? What would be the advantage vs disadvantage & as an installer what would benefit us best (eg. in terms of regular maintenance income). Sincerely appreciate any feedback. Thanks.

In order to chose the correct VOIP technology, you must first evaluate your needs.
1) Are overseas calls being placed to customers or employees? Customers = IP trunks, employees = IP phones
2) Are calls being placed to just one country such as USA or to any country. If just one country, do you have a remote office there? If so, you should look at networking the two phone systems & implement least cost routing between.
3) Can your existing phone system be VOIP enabled? I'm not familiar but others on this board would know.

If you end up looking for an IP trunks solution, I can help you with nexvortex service. See international rates: https://www.nexvortex.com/PublicPages/services.aspx

Thanks "aweaver" for your quick reply.
Most calls are made to their customers using all the 8 CO Trunks they have. Is it advisable to go all 8 CO Trunks on VOIP or partially first?

For the connection, how do we connect the CO lines coming from the Telco to the VOIP Gateway & to the KSU. Customer's concern is if the VOIP Gateway is faulty or switched off, can they still receive incoming & make outgoing calls automatically or will the CO line be diconnected.

Also, their calls are made to many countries.

Regards.

1) I would recommend keeping (4) lines for inbound for the following reasons.
a) You won't have to worry about number portability. Company phone number stays as is.
b) There's no need for toll savings on inbound calls, so don't rack up VOIP minutes for inbound.
c) These (4) lines will serve as redundancy in the event VOIP service is lost.

2) Connect the (4) CO lines to KSU as they are now. Connect the (4) new VOIP lines from the FXS ports on the gateway to loop start trunks on the KSU.

Do you have the resources to install a gateway that's configured via command line or do you need help finding a local installer.

email me if you have further interest in Nexvortex.
