I found this place on line that offers on line training on SIP. www.thesipschool.com. Supposedly you get some sort of certification after completing their course. Is this something legit or just a money making scheme? Has anyone heard of them? Does this kind of certification mean anything in the "real world"?

To me, it's sort of like the truck driving schools. In two weeks they teach you how to drive an 18-wheeler. The only thing is, it takes years & years of everyday practical experience to know how to drive a truck and to drive one over-the-road so that you can make some money.
I think it's the same with SIP trunks and VOIP. We read as much as we can, but we learn more when we actually work with VOIP systems and the SIP trunks.
I think both would be a waste of time & money. That's just my opinion, though.

I'm in no hurry to sign up for it. They are just trying to make a commodity of things. Why look for experienced and knowledgeable individuals when you can just search for a stock number, err I mean Certificate.
I run into these type of guys a lot. They know all the theory and definition of terms but have little to zero applicable knowledge.

I see job posting after job postin on VOIP Specialists and one of the qualifications is you have to be CISCO certified. Too me, it seems your knowledge of the industry and your experience would win out. For some reason I guess HR people need to justify HIGH salaries for these positions.

I agree most certificates do not amount to much if you are just learning BUT I do believe it means you have the apptitude to learn the trade and could help when looking for entry level jobs.
I have 2 Cisco CCIE's working for me and these guys know what they are doing, they don't give those cert's away.
Generic IP schools I don't think have much value though - it is like truck driving school.

Lane,
I totally agree with you on the CCIE guys. If they are that versed in the Cisco product and "theory" behind networking and can figure out certain anomalies on a network that they do, my hats off to them....

Thanks for all of your comments. I think will continue learning hands on. I set up an Asterisk about 5 years ago at the house. The hard drive just crashed a few weeks ago. So I upgraded to the newer software and am back up and running with it. So I have worked with SIP on a limited basis. Just looking at furthering my knowledge.
