I was looking for issues that might cause intermittent static on some phones and discoverd a number of M18 phones(different cards) wired with the orange(data) pair reversed. I didn't think the digital phones would work with ANY wiring reversals but these phones work with the orange pair straight or reversed. Since I've never seen this before I straightened the orange pair out on the phones that were complaining of static but left the other ones alone(if it ain't broke don't fix it). I'm just wondering if anyone else has seen this and maybe there may have been some reason to do this?

I've seen IDS phones run on 3 wires...

The IDS use's the wh/bl pair to talk to the phone, and the wh/or pair from the phone to talk to the cabinet.

it's Digital, No Static, reversals sometimes don't matter, it still works.

There is also aproblem with 15700 cards. The phones would not wok properly if tey wher within 60 feet of the cabinet, we reversed the second pair or put these special resistor base cords on to fake the system out.

Good Luck!!

thanks for your replies, nonameyet and jj. I've never tried running the phone on 3 wires but I can't believe the phone would be working at 100%. My understanding is that the blue pair is power and orange is the data pair. I agree that digital is not susceptible to static however i've seen coil cords and handsets create static problems as well as a bad punch on one wire of the orange pair. I remember years ago the problem with phones being too close to the cabinet and the use of resistive base or station cords to correct although I didn't know you could also reverse the orange pair to correct. The reversals i'm seeing may have had something to do with this, thanks again to all.
