Thanks for the info, looks like they finally had to agree to give up some stuff to make it work. Hope all works well for the employees.

Thanks for posting this information, nfcphoneman.
I guess I should have have seen this coming. I used to live in Charlotte, worked as an AT&T contractor for the County Sherriff's Office, to remove all their BellSouth payphones, inmate phones & system...and of course, installing AT&T payphones, inmate phones right onto the same BellSouth backboards.
The article mentions approx 10,000 jobs being "phased out". . You're right Bill, I hope it somehow works out well for the workers too.

I think it's horrible. All of these mega-mergers happening aren't going to recreate the Bell System. They are going to show what a mockery our court system can be.
Dexman, I have been wondering for some time when Verizon was going to gobble up BellSouth since they have adjacent territories in several states. I didn't see Qwest as being as much of a possibility, but honestly when SBC bought AT&T, I expected Verizon to pull a trick out of their hat. They did this with the accquisition of MCI, even though Qwest didn't like it. I figured that it was just a matter of time before Verizon would gobble them up as well.
Give it a year and what you will see is "at&t" and Verizon operating in the capacity of GTE. They will once again be the two heavyweights in the industry and the little telcos will once again become the independents.
I am not so sure that Verizon doesn't have it's eye on Embarq/Sprint/UTS/Centel/whatever. They still have some territory within many states that would easily give them a 100% LEC presence with such an accquisition.

The mergers/takeovers are definately becoming much more frequent. Our LEC recently switched from Sprint to Embarq..The new Embarq signs look kinda "temporary".
As you might say Ed, There's another merger on the verizon.

Commerce Texas has switched from Sprint to Embarq. I see the same techs out in the field as always. They don't say anything about the change good or bad. Maybe they were told not to.

I saw a commercial last night about BellSouth becoming at&t. That didn't take long.
