I received a call from a customer complaining that their fax line is always busy. Obviously, we know the reason for this, but they claim that their existing HP fax machine has the ability to connect more than one line to it and the second transmission is just held in memory until the current print job is finished. I have heard of multiple-line fax servers, but never a stand alone fax machine that will do this. They claim that HP actually told them that this can be done. Has anybody ever heard of these?

I had an HP that you could "queue" faxes to be sent on, as long as you had the add-in memory stick. It would still only send one at a time, but it would store several of them and send them in order when the line freed up.

I have actually connected one of these. It works just like they say. The fax machine has two built in modems and accepts two lines. You connect a second rollover line and now you can have two transmissions at the same time. I can't recall the brand of the one I connected, and I can't find an example of one from HP, but Okidata does have one: https://www.okidata.com/mkt/html/nf/OF5980Home.html

This would definitely be two separate phone lines coming in, with hunting between them. My impression is that each line will be answered, but only one can be printed at a time. The second call is held in memory. I have not been able to get the model number of the fax because my contact is in a different office and she will need to go there. They definitely plan on having a second fax line brought in with hunting. I have always just done this with two fax machines, but they are pretty insistent that this is the way they want to go.

I'm a little surprised they didn't have it connected to two lines from the get go. A high volume, two line fax machine is pretty damn expensive. I couldn't imagine buying one unless you were absolutely sure you needed to use both lines.

Well , we know that is impossible one analog line one transmission at a time . If it was a Fax server or a IP Fax application then sure it can be done . But not via an analog fax line. Good Luck , as we all know if the Ice Cream Man tells a customer his messaging waiting light should flash "ole dixie" we will get a service call and an arugement ! smile :toast:

We have a mid/high-end Canon Imagerunner all-in one document powerhouse. It has a two-line fax card. On my PBX side, I have the main fax line ring down to the first port of the card, and then the second if busy. On the Canon, the send settings list the second line as the primary outbound line and then the first. For outbound, jobs will queue up as necessary. Inbound jobs are never printed, they are stored in an email folder. Obviously, if both lines are busy, no more faxes can come in... but we've never been THAT busy.....

I just googled "multi-line fax machine" and found 2 line units from Xerox and Panasonic, but nothing from HP. But, obviously they do exist.
