Anyone know a good way to tone a Cat 5, 5E or 6 cable?

Specifically....if it's NOT connected at either end...no problem. However when I'm trying to trace a cable to test if it's good from a PC for example the tone won't work at the other end if it's still connected to the network.

This comes up quite frequently when some bozo installed the cables without numbering at both ends. When you're working on a big network, it's risky to be pulling off wires even for 5 seconds each.

There are some toners that will blink the hub/switch port. You just plug this into the workstation jack and it will do it.

Dave, Jeff has the right one IF you can distinguish the activity flash from the toner flash.

Use a 8 position breakout and a Tempio (SP?) 77gx on fast tone and high power on the White/Brown pair.....jumps right out. help

Ken, and this will work even while still connected at the panel, hub, router, whatever?

Yes it should IF you use a good toner and probe. Put the tone on the Wh/Br pair at the jack end. You may have to move your probe tip around the outside of cable but it should be there. Keep in mind also that that cable should have no activity on it so that should narrow it down a bit just from looking at the LEDs on the router or hub.

The trouble is Hall, some nitwit installed the hubs, routers, etc under someone's desk. He's BIG and don't like to be disturbed.

The bigger problem is that they left loops and there are a lot of dead ended cables, patch cords etc. There are also at least 2 networks if not 3.

It's basically an installer's nightmare working there. Hard to see and limited space to work in.

There were several lights not lit up...some due to unplugged cables at that end and some at the other. Also there were no numbers marked on the rear of the routers and it wasn't as simple as left to right.

Be careful when you connect that 4th pair! You may have a POE switch on the other end or to really shake things up there might be a gigabit switch on the other end!!

I've found that using a full pair works real well, so if it's working put your tone on the w/bl and the w/br pairs. Just using the tip and ring most tones and probes don't pick it up real well, no problem with just a few cables, but if you have quite a bunch not so good. Like said above, not on gigabit
