Folks, I'm lookin for guidance. I'm trying to bring myself up to speed on some VoIP issues. To acheive the highest QoS on a VoIP system, (I'm learning here), your voice packets need to be priority 1; correct? Or isolated from other network traffic. I'm trying to decipher the difference from SIP Trunks, T1 Lines, and PRI. What is the ideal media for VoIP or is there one? If someone could steer me in the right direction for resources I'd appreciate it.

There are too many opinions out there and not enough fact. Thanks!!

Voice packets should be in priority class 5. Priority class 1(default) would typically be for regular data packets.

  • VoIP is only as good as your LAN and WAN

  • set up VLans to separate traffic

  • prioritize voice traffic/packets

  • SIP is up and coming, sometimes requires licensing. SIP over the internet 'iffy', as the internet is not exactly a managed system (no QoS)

  • DSS T1 works fine, but no Caller ID. QoS not applicable

  • PRI works fine, has Caller ID. QoS not applicable

  • there are all kinds of gateways to control and hand-off and convert and connect the differing types of traffic and hardware. all's it takes is imagination and money

my two-cents. tip of the iceberg, VoIP's a big subject.

VOIP can be used with Internal netwroks effectively, thought the initial cost being high there is no limitation on the amount of calls made over the internal network..

T1/PRI is service providr dependent and mainly used for external world communications..
