Dear People,

I am a PC tech, but I installed a few Partner 7 stand alones over the years. PACS R7.0 91J

I now have a customer who needs a few more extensions and I bought the 308ec r3 with 2-slot.
I thought this would take me 30 minutes but the 308EC gets no led light and its extension are dead when I attach phone 18D. The ACS works with no problems, by itself.

Now the supplier tells me that there are problems with the 2-slot, that it is hard to seat, which does not appear to me to be a problem, just plug it in square and it should go.

Supplier is shipping out 5 slot as this is his remedy, but I have little room for it as the initial wiring on backboard was cramped, so 2-slot would be perfect.

I also understand some ACS might have bad backplane and that would end this. Unfortunately I do not have any spare modules to test it out.

Now my 1st question is can I test the 308EC by plugging power cord directing into it and see if it at least lights up?

I do not expect anything but a led light or would this blow the unit.

2nd question is there any fuse on the 2-slot, I found mention of a surface mount fuse?

3rd Is this 2-slot really a problem, so far 3 suppliers said yes and 3 said no?

I apologize for the length of this post.

Thanks,

Oz Knott

as I recall there is a different 2 slot carrier for the ACS and the Partner/partner 11 that could be your problem if your using a partner two slot carrier on a ACS . probably a pretty good chance your "distributors " dont know the difference

the 5 slot carrier should tell you for sure , I dont believe you can plug the power cord directly into a 308

There were two different 2 slot carriers, the original Partner and a newer one. I think the newer one predated the ACS but that is the one you want to use. You do have the mods installed correctly, the ACS goes on the left as you are looking at the card connectors?

Yes, you can plug the power cord into the 308EC and the green light should light but that really doesn't mean much of anything.

Since you are getting a 5 slot put your mods in and see if they work. You can always return it and tell them to send you the correct 2 slot if they work.

Dear Skip555,

I believe the 2 slot had an ACS and Endeaver label on it. I was told that if it fit then it was the correct one. Experience is really great and I am lacking this. I might add that this equipment was refurbed although what could you refurb on a 2 slot, maybe wipe it off?

On the power cord I figured you could plug it in directly to at least test the power supply and hopefully it would ligt up, it would not work otherwise because no info from processor.

Thanks,

Oz

Dear hbiss,

If you looked at the 2-slot directly the ACS is on right, or directly on the backboard as originally mounted. The Avaya docs show that you then just place 308ec on it and the 2 slot plugs into it. The backplanes are different sizes so it only can go one way.

Thanks,

Oz

That would be correct- with two screws to hold the carrier to the mods and hold the top mod in place. However I always assemble it first then use long #8 screws through the top and bottom of both mods to screw it to the backboard. Makes it a lot easier to change a mod out later on because you aren't taking it apart on the wall. Just pull the cables and remove the screws.

The backplanes are different sizes so it only can go one way.

They are card edge connectors not backplanes. I was going to mention the sizes. With the older carriers both were the same, the newer ones the processor connector was larger because the ACS had a larger card edge. So you are OK on both counts. Try the 5 slot and if that still doesn't work either the ACS or the 308EC is bad. This is refurbed so none of that should be unexpected.

I never liked the 2 slot carrier. Never seemed to be a good fit. AVAYA, when they were installing Partners usually installed a 5 slot carrier even for 1 card.

Dear People,

Thanks for all the replies.
Thanks hbiss for correcting my backplane wording.

I will have another ACS 7 to test with this weekend and will let you know the results.

Dear People,
The 5 slot worked, no problem.

I tried the 2-slot when I had everything off board and it still would not work, it was the correct fit. I took it apart and it had only straight connections between the card edge connecting slots, same with power, no components to fail, everything metered ok, no fuse to replace. I moved it around and still nothing, I had one work before with no issue, I am stymied on this one, but it works and 5 slot has expansion and better cooling. The 308EC's green light works now. The only reason I can guess at for not working is the card edge slots were bad or maybe there is another unit that this needs.

Thanks for the replies and good luck.

Oz
As far as plugging into the power cord direct, I did that but no light, this probably only lights when it is coconnected to processor. I tdid not damage the unit and is worthless as a test.

Yeah, I tried that with a 206EC and the light did come on so I assumed that would be the case with the 308 also. I've never used connecting the power cord to a mod as a test other than to find the one that is blowing the fuse in a five slot.

Sounds like you have a bad 2 slot but then again there may be something with the ACS R7. The R7 was plagued with bugs and I don't know if they were resolved until the later releases of the R8. So I wouldn't use the the R7. Then too I'm wondering if the 2 slot is supported by the R7 and R8. Never looked.
