sx200 ml LW 19 (lodging package)
Just upgraded our system from a 200d to the above and was wondering if anyone could clarify on what the Front desk terminal entails. It sounds like it is a quasi PMS alternative, but is it just software we put on a PC at the front desk (if so what is the interface? a dataset) or is it a unit from mitel. Any assistance would be appreciated.

It is pretty much a dumb terminal (VT100) mode situation. You might be able to use a computer booted up to a VT100 compatible program like Hyperterminal or Procomm but I bet you can find some old Wyse (or comparable) dumb terminals dirt cheap. You interface the terminal via a dataset. However you can not do any billing for rooms or posting of any other charges (Ie long distance) so, to my mind it is pretty much useless. Only thing I could see using it for is an independent small (up to 100 rooms) that does not allow any LD from the rooms.

The front desk terminal is a device that lets you do the room associated stuff, like changing dialing permission for room, setting wakeups, changing room status, etc. You can do all this from a Superconsole 1000, so it's really kind of overkill, unless the console is always tied up with calls. If that's true, sub-attendent Supersets are a better choice, 'cause #1, they're phones! John C. (Not Garand)

If the hotel staff uses the maid status and checkouts, properly you'll also be able to see a display of the checked in, checked out, and room availability. Other than being able to produce a billing statement, it's not a bad "poor man's" PMS.
