Hello all, I have a hotel in San Francisco that is using older Teledex phones and the units are losing their programing. I'm told the batteries are ok but Electro Static Dissipation is causing the processor to lose the programing. They tell me there is a spray to put on the carpets to stop this. Does anyone know anything about this or similar fixes?

Make sure your system is grounded good.
I've only seen lips get shocked because of static electricity, not the CPU losing it's memory.
You may have what I call gremlins which occurs from power fluctuating...To fix this turn your systems off (unplug the control unit and leave it set a minimum of 20 to 30 minutes (so the capacitors can discharge) plug it back in, gremlins will disappear.

Static Guard works well.

I agree, an end user set will not cause loss of programming to the CPU from static electricity.
I would suggest what Test-OK recommended.
You could try the Sandman trick, but will only reduce Eletrostatic build up on the carpets(your guests may thank you) but it won't help your problem.
Have you made any changes to the room where the phone system is kept?

I think that rons means the phone button programming is being lost which is stored in the phone itself (these are hotel phones)- not the PBX programming . I would:
1. Replace batteries anyway - especially if they're more than a couple of years old.
2. Do the Downey/Water spray combo.
Trouble should be a bit better as we get into higher humidity months.

I think they have a lithium battery in there and those are good for ten years or more.

Easy way to find out for sure if it is static discharge is to program a phone and walk across the carpet vigerously and touch the phone while holding a piece of copper pipe. (You don't feel the zap.)

Take along several pairs of shoes with soles of different material.

You will certainly know for sure if static discharge was doing it.

Almost 20 years ago, I was putting in Macrotel Excel phone systems and I walked across the carpet, touched the ksu, and boom the unit was dead.

Having gotten in a six pack of KSUs, I went back to the office and got another one. Again boom when I walked back to the carpet. We hooked up a ground wire to the round hole of an electrical outlet and touched that before we touched the KSU and at least got the third unit working.

I called Macrotel, they called Samsung who OEM'ed them and the production line stopped. They had subsituted metal capacitors for ceramic capacitors or the other way around and static would kill every ksu.

Every ksu that had been shipped here had to have 16 capacitors replaced, every ksu ready for shipping had to be pulled apart and the assembly line closed for several days while they sourced the replacement capacitors.

Be happy if the phone only loses its memory, it could be worse.

Do carpet people who sell hotels know nothing of static electricity and why did they sell this carpeting? That is the real question, not mearly accepting responsibility for the phones.

Did the carpet salesperson think the guests would enjoy touching a ground somewhere and get a nasty zap?

You are trying to spray Downey when it is the carpet salesperson who should be grabbed by the scuff of his or her neck.
