Hal, I don't doubt a bit that it was in a trade magazine. I'm just saying if it were a union push then the non union influenced right to work states wouldn't have the requirement. That is why I say it's industry driven, because only the industry would be able in influence those locations. I have no proof of this, it just seems logical to me.
Darryll, I'm a little surprised that non union and union work together with no problems in a close shop state, but I'll bet you don't have union and non union doing the same job. I have seen as you said in San Francisco, where if it's a union site it's all union. I do know that different locations have different laws on closed shop, but I have no idea if that has anything to do with it.

In Sacramento , I can say that Union and Non Union trades do get along on our jobs . I think a lot has to do with Professionalism , following local codes and a willingness to comprimise . IMHO. As a prior member of local CWA 9415 from 1972 to 1987 . I have been down both roads . I think as professionals all we are looking for is a job well done !

We had a customer a few years back that called and wanted us to move their Classic Merlin to their new office.
So we show up to look the job over when they told us that they just want us to move the equip. and that their electrician would be doing the cableing.
So we show up to install a month or so later and find the electrican run 2pr red, green, black, yellow cable for their phones!!!
So we had to sell them a new Partner system that would work on that wire so they could move in.

Remember something too, there is a world of difference between the CWA and the IBEW. For the most part I regard members of the CWA as professionals in this trade and they have no problem working with others.
Contrast that to the IBEW not letting even CWA members work on the same job.

Now that you mention it Hal . I do recall a new construction job I was working on in 1979/80 . Every day we walked on the job site the IBEW Steward asked us for our Union Card . Since it was a large Hotel install it got old very fast . We dealt with it in a professional manner . He was the one that looked like a fool in the end !

In NYC Verizon, which is predominantly CWA has to maintain a number of IBEW member employees just so that they do work within buildings. In the Avaya strike thread it also mentions IBEW members. There has been legal action charging the IBEW and several New York City IBEW electrical contractors with anti-trust violations that has been going on for several years- Local 3 IBEW Anti-trust Action Summary Looks like telco is winning for what it's worth. -Hal

Minor point -- red-green-yellow-black telephone cable is quad, not 2 pair. A two pair cable has two separate pairs of wire twisted together. With quad, all four wires are twisted together. For analog voice it is no problem. A few feet of quad kills 10baseT Ethernet.

Years back when we worked for NY Tel, we went into do a job in new construction. Stopped at the door and asked "who are you guys" Said NYTel, Let me see your union cards says he, sure no problem we said. Let us see your union card. He said I'm IBEW I don't have to show you anything. We walked past him and he left in a huff, to return in a few seconds with another IBEW guy. The second guy, a little older, asked what the problem was and was told the story, the second guy said to the first guy, I see nothing wrong with that request, show them your card. He showed us and we did the same. The rest of the time on the job we got along great together. Just a little story from days of old :toast:
