I need to have an extra backup disk for disaster recovery for our 704i. We have a second one but it is possibly bad so I don't want to count on it and want to replace it. I spoke to our vendor and got a quote for $350/disk. Is this correct?!?! I know NEC is notorious for having proprietary stuff...but $350 for a floppy seems a little excessive. I will pay if necessary, but if there is a way around, please let me know.

Much thanks!
-Glenn

Heck, that's only 0.02 cents per byte, surely you see what a bargain that is?

You might try copying the working disk using a "raw copy" utility. It's easy to do with the DD utility under Linux.

I'm sure there's better options, but there's a port of DD to windows here:

https://uranus.it.swin.edu.au/~jn/linux/rawwrite/dd.htm

(I don't know if this will work, it's just something to try)

Sampson, good idea because if that disk goes you have lost it all. I am pretty sure it's an RMX formatted diskette but I am not sure. I AM sure the 704i uses a specially formatted disk becuase of the database size and it's actually listed with a specific part number. Good luck and let us know how you do...if all fails $350.00 is a bargain especially if you have a crash.

I am not questioning the worth of having the information...and I have expressed the worth to those above me, but the question of the cost is rolling down to me to justify paying $350 for a floppy. I was asked to take the one known good copy and try to just copy it straight to another floppy which I flat out refused. Last thing we need to happen is to ruin our only system database. I need to make sure that it isn't possible to copy system disks. If we didn't have one it would be a no brainer-it would be purchased in a flash...but since we have one do we really need to pay for all the system programming all over again is my main question. That seems to be where the cost comes into play.

I do have the PC program so I back up the system programming regularly just as I do system backup to floppy and VM backups. I just want the warm fuzzy of having an additional floppy in case something goes south with this floppy as did with the other one we had.

Thanks for the feedback,
-Glenn

Yeah, that's a real bummer that you have to have that disk to even boot up.
