My wife's office has an older phone system with TIE W-1236 phones. She would like to purchase Plantronics Wireless headsets and as it sits when the phone rings a line must be chosen (12 lines available). Is this phone (Plantronics device attached to/W-1236)programable so lifting the handset automatically activates a specific line (say line 5). If so this would allow the headphone wearer to answer the line 5 anywhere in the building. Currently lifting the handset does nothing until the line button is pressed, therfore using a handset lifter would do nothing and she would be tied to her desk to answer the phone.

Do you know what type of system they have? Knowing what the part number of the phones isn't always very useful. I unfortunately have no idea what system this is, and I can only give you general advice.

Most systems will allow you to program phones to either auto pick up a ringing line or wait for a line key to be pressed. Having the phone grab one specific line when the handset is lifted wouldn't do much good...what about calls coming in on the other 7 lines?

Either way you are looking at something that is typically in system programming and not something you would find in the user guide. Has anyone called the interconnect company that services this sytem to ask them?

I'm fairly sure they won't do it, that system was manufactured in the late 70's early 80's and I don't recall the headset feature coming out until the late 80's and only on a very few systems. Maybe someone will know for sure..it's not likely anyone has a system set up to test it on either.
I also recall Mike Sandman was big into Tie, he might know.

W1236 was on the Ultracom. There was no headset adapter or special purpose programming that would allow a phone to pick any line just by going off-hook. Even the last enhancement (EROU-D) card had no provision. It was a pretty smart system in it's prime, but it's prime was over by 1987! It was one of the systems that TIE built for everyone. Wood grain phone for warehouse ditribution, very modern (at the time) appearing black and white phone for factory-direct dealers, and if you would commit to major quantities of product, they'd design a phone just for your distribution network!

Clinton, two of the twelve lines are restricted to my wifes office, the remaining lines are divided amongst the other five offices (not used by my wifes office). One of the two lines in my wifes office (line 5)is restricted to incoming appointmnets and the other (line 6)is a private line. Each line in each office has a different number, therefore my wifes office has two phone numbers.

Clightninghorse this is what I was looking for "There was no special purpose programming that would allow a phone to pick any line just by going off-hook."

Plantronics says the CS55 or CS70 will work with the W-1236, unfortunatly my wife will have to choose her office line (button 5), allow the handset lifter to lift the handset off-hook so she can talk hands free and without having to rest the handset on her shoulder. Bottom line she is restricted to being at her desk to answer any calls (line button must be manually activated).

The TIE handset would be unplugged from the TIE base (handset port) and would plug into the Plantronics base unit and a patch cord from the Plantronics base will plug into the TIE Base (handset port).

Thanks for the feedback

I think I remember that the Ultracom EROU-D had Ringing Line Preference, which would solve the problem, but maybe only if the phone had a DSS assigned to it.
