Hello all ... this is kind of a strange question, but I have a customer with a Norstar CICS 4.2 system and a Valcom paging unit. When they page (F630) the telephone sets make the paging tone ... they would like the paging tone to go over the external page as well. I don't know if this is possible, as I don't see it in programming.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

There is an option in programming to turn the tone on/off but that is all. If you are hearing the tone on the sets, it should be passing it thorugh to you external speakers as well. How did you interface the Valcom, page output or through a CO port?

If the tone is enabled, it will be heard over the set speakers and the external page port. If you are using a station level or trunk level page adapter, that is not using the Norstar's PAGE feature. So, the system will not be able to provide tone. I think there are page adapters available that will provide a tone though.

I have the paging unit connected through the page port of the phone system (violet/slate) into the page input of the valcom system. I also notice that there is "external page" on the violet/brown pair ... would that make a difference?

Violet/slate is the right pair (v/br is a contact closure). If you put a test-set across the v/sl pair and make a page, you should get the tone. What kind (model) page adapter are you using?

I am using a Valcom V-2001A ... I will try with the test set, but I know that as soon as you page (either F62 or F630) you can begin speaking, so the voice is definately going over immediately.

Also, if I press the numbers on the phone, those tones pass through to the speakers

I think your issue could just be the frequency of the tone. There is voice activated circuitry in your page adapter that might be prohibiting the tone.

The GOOD news is that the page adapter supports its own pre-page tone. You can use the contact closure (v/br pair) to make it work.

Here is where to connect it (from Valcom Install guide):

Pre-Page Alert Tone Option
The Pre-Page Alert Tone may be used when
accessing the unit from an electronic key
system, C. O. Line position, PABX Trunk Port or
a Page Port with a contact closure. Page Ports
must provide a contact closure output. To
enable the pre-page alert tone feature, place a
jumper on the yellow and black leads (outer pair
of RJ-11) of J3. (See Figure 1).
NOTE: The pre-page alert tone operates on
the primary paging input only.

Good Luck!

Ok ... I will have to try that ... I have tried connecting just a regular speaker to the page output of the norstar, and there is no tone on that either.

Thank you all for your help and suggestions.
