Have a customer that insists on cranking the volume on his handset to the max setting. He is using a CICS at the moment. problem is when doing so it obviously amplifies the noise on the line and the normal "humm" in a line. The line noise I hear and everyone in the office hears is fine. He is the only 1 that has issues with it. States that he can not hear the caller that it gets so bad. I have yet to hear such noise that bad. AT&T has been out 4 times, I have replaced the KSU all the cards, 25 pair connectors, 66 block, phone, and station cabling. Even installed a Partner system to show him that the normal "hiss" is normal. I do not know what else to do to make him happy.

If some of the noise is coming through the transmitter, you could try a noise canceling handset. Other than that, what Anthony said.

Clarity makes some pretty impressive handset amplifiers that clean up side tones and other things that make those who are hard of hearing, well, hear.
Check out one of their in-line amplifiers to the handset. They are universal as far as I know for any handset on any phone.
Clarity specializes in devices that help to overcome these issues. So far, they have saved me three times and the price for them is practically nothing. Target Distributing stocks their stuff.

Buy the guy a hearing aid so he doesn't need to crank the volume so much? We have actually installed one of the Clarity amplifiers mentioned by ev607797, I think it was a model 125 or something like that. It not only upped the volume to the ear, but supressed normal line hiss that you would normally encounter at that volume level. The price was only like twenty five bucks or so, definitely worth a look into for the problem your having. Oh, and good luck... LOL
