we have a dilemma in our family...
my sister uses too many minutes on the family talk shared plan on verizon wireless - our last bill was about $500. she doesn't get it that the bill is outrageous due to her. is there any way a service provider or verizon can restrict a certain number to X amount of peak minutes and/or restrict time of day use? the only thing i can think of is to use a cell phone scrambler in the house but that defeats the purpose of having cell phones.

what about going to prepaid cell phones, you get a set amount of minutes per month...once that time is used you need to add more minutes via a credit card or bank card. That way she either pays for the extra minutes her self, or she goes without a cell phone until the next month.

I'd take the phone and have her get her own plan.

I heard an advertisement last week about a cell phone that would only allow you to call 4 preprogrammed numbers. It did not display its number when you powered it up. If you wanted a phone to use to call only family members, this may work for you. The advertiser was an agent for Verizon Wireless.

I have a prepaid TracFone. If you want to know about it, let me know. It works for my needs but it is SUPER expensive just to chat on. She'd be better off with her own phone/bill on an unlimited plan of sorts.

Alltel Wireless is advertising a plan where you can pick any ten numbers that you want to call that are included as "free" calls in the plan.

True, with kids this plan might not work since the "love her" one day and "hate her" the next would likely apply in your case.

I like the Alltel idea. I am hoping that Verizon Wireless eventually starts allowing free calls to Verizon land line customers. Other carriers would soon follow. Now that would be nice.

Cingular rollover family talk 850 (minutes)

When she get's close to her limit you can go online to check, and suspend, her cell service. Suspended service still allows 911 calls.

Got one in college, been there, done that. Within a few months she was tamed. Then came text message units, I had the feature turned off, it took a year but now she uses it responsibly. Of course she hates me, but that goes with the job title, Dad.
