I live in an apartment and we have DSL running through our phoneline and we also have a phone. The problem is I have a DSL filter on the line running to the phone, but I am still receiving "static" in the background whenever I use the phone. The static is loud enough to really get on my nerves when I use the phone and the person on the other end. I have tried using a different filter that I know for sure works and I still get the same amount of static in the background. Whenever I remove the phone cord that is plugged into the DSL modem from the wall the static completely goes away when I am on the phone. Then if i plug the modem phone cord back in the static comes right back and i don't know why. I have called the DSL company to ask them what might be wrong and they just tell me it's not them that it's the phone company. Then when i called the phone company to see what could be wrong they tell me it's the DSL company, so i just keep getting tossed back and forth and i just want to find the problem. I was wondering if anyone could offer any knowledge on the subject and possibly tell me if it would be the phone service that's causing this or the DSL.
Thanks

Does the cord that goes from the jack to the DSL modem have a filter in line or is it straight to the DSL modem?
Have you tried a different cord from the jack to the DSL modem?
Have you tried resetting the DSL modem?

captcurt, I have seen this in a house in a higher end subdivision we handle. After a month of back and forth with the phone company and DSL provider we finally replaced the modem/router and it went away. The modem in question was a netopia and we replaced it with an Alcatel modem. Have you requested a replacement modem from your DSL provider. If not you can get the Zoom ADSL X5 dsl modem/router from CompUSA, Staples, Best Buy, etc for less than $100.

RCA, No the cord that goes from the jack to the DSL modem does not have a filter on it. No i haven't tried a different cord yet because all i have are the standard phone cords with only two wires running through them and not the ones with 4 wires. No i haven't tried resetting the DSL modem.
I will try resetting the modem, and then i'll get back to you.
Thanks alot!

captcurt - you don't need the phone cord with 4 wires in it to use a DSL modem, it is still single pair so you can try any phone cord in it. If it is the brand new cord that came with the modem kit it would be unlikely that it is bad, but never hurts to eliminate it as a candidate for your problems.

Try temporarily removing the line from DSL modem and see if the noise goes away. Did noise begin when DSL service was added? Can you take your phone/filter to wherever telco network interface is located and try there - eliminating inside wiring as a culprit? Have you tried a different physical telephone? Mike

Whenever i remove the line from the DSL modem the noise goes away. The DSL service was added before the phone service was added, so we had the DSL before the phone. Yes i have tried a different phone and i got the same result. I'm pretty sure the wiring is fine.

You may have to change brands of filters. Some do a better job than others. The filter is just a RF choke that allows voice level frequencies to pass to the telephone. I always prefer to use DSL splitters at the demarc but since you live in an apartment that is probably not an option.

You could try stacking the filters by plugging two filters together I have seen this help if the DSL signal was high
