I am installing a Nortel Venture system into my wifes pediatric clinic to replace an aging key system. I ran new home run cabling, plugged in all the Venture phones and disconnected the key system. Everything is working fine except line two, it has a message that says extension in use. You can call the phone # that is line two and it will ring, only it shows up as line three. Anyone know what I'm doing wrong? I know almost nothing about phone systems, any help would be greatly appreciated. Jim

My guess is a bad circuit board in one of the phones, or a bad cam (where the cords plug into). Try disconnecting one phone at a time until the problem clears. Go from there.

Are these new? By that I don't mean "New From eBay". If that's where you go them, plan on sending at least one back.

I thought the same thing, but I have six of these and they are all doing the same thing, and I changed cams around with the same result. I ran cat 6 cabling and used all four pair, 3 for the venture and the fourth for a dedicated fax. Could this be a problem with the rollover lines since line 3 is our primary number and line 2 is our rollover to the primary? Do these phones have different behaviour when it comes to rollover lines like this?

Sounds like you have a short on line 2. When you call it, it's busy, so it rolls to line 3.

Would that give the "extension in use" message? How hard would it be to get a short running the new cable?

I'm going to the office now and running a new cable to AT&T from the punch down, I'll isolate each line until we find it. Thanks guys, I'll let you know how it turned out.

A short will cause the phones to give the "in use" message and busy the line causing it to roll.

If it was open, those particular phones will say "check line cord" and it won't roll when you call it, just ring.

Are you using 2 line cords plugged into the back of the phone?

If you are then you probably have line one plugged into the line 1&2 port and line 2 Plugged into the Line 3&4 port.

How many total phone lines do you have on these phones. 2 or 3 all 4 of them.

They will only handle 3 lines. I ran all of them on the same cable, from a punch down and then split them at the end and ran a seperate jack for each line. I used RJ 12 Modules and went back and double checked all of them to make sure they were correct. I think twisted has me going in the right direction, I just have not made it back to the office because my son just pulled up in the driveway a few hours ago with steam bellowing up from under my trucks hood. Thanks everyone for all the help, if your kids get sick you guys can email my wife to return the favor.
