I have a bcm 400 3.7 and would like to know if you
can use the 2nd eithernet port for remote maintance off site. have tried accessing it thru
linksys router with no luck. anyone else use this
port off site. I have a ststic ip for it.

Yes. The second port can be used for administration. How you get to it from your remote location is up to you. For the sake of security, I would recommend a VPN.

have tried a vpn tunnel and can ping the router and all other computers on that network however the bcm broswer screen will not start.

the bcm does not reply is there an option that may need to be turned on?

No options...it's got to be a networking issue.

You definately need to be able to ping the interface before you can administer the box. If there is more than one router involved, make sure that the BCM knows how to get to all of the networks it needs to reach. You may need to configure a static route to your remote network, that points to the new router.

If your remote computer appears to be on the same subnet (depending on how your VPN is configured) as the BCM, and you still can't reach it, your problem is more basic -- check IP address, mask, physical connections, etc.

The first port is tied to a vpn to a second office with ip phones.The next hop router in the bcm is this address. can I set up a 2nd next hop address for port 2? i did not see where to do this.

There can only be one 'next hop router' (default gateway) per system. You will have to configure a static route to get out the second router.
