find a competant tech to hire. I have tried word of mouth, ads in the paper, and have contemplated kidnapping one from a SBC truck. Anyone have a better idea? Where does one find a tech when you need one? Has anyone had luck using a temp agency?

Well, you would be wasting your time hiring an SBC "tech". Unless they have been there for 10+ years AND are willing to jump ship, don't bother. It's not likely that you can beat the union wages and benefits they receive unless your company has deep pockets. The new stock of personnel at any telco is not nearly the quality that you are needing. Not to insult them, but they are simply drones working for the queen bee.
I hate to tell you, but anyone who is worth ten cents is gainfully and happily employed. The ones who respond to tacky and unrealistic pay increases are not worth it to you. They aren't as good as they think they are.
You have to hire greenies and train them from scratch if you want quality. It's going to take years. Invest in CBT courses for the manufacturers you sell. They are cheap and will quickly help you determine the quality of the person(s) you have hired. I seem to recall that your company sells the Vodavi STS. That's a good system for them to cut their teeth on.
Everybody wants to be a CG straight out of school anyomore. I am surprised you are even able to hire electricians. Maybe that's another sore subject, so forget I mentioned it.

I had a tech fresh out of the Air Force that was great. He is not with me anymore because he moved to another state. We have about six of these guys in the area, everyone of them does excellent work. From what I can see the Air Force must have a good training program for the communications tech's.

I’ve met literally hundreds of folks over the years that would NOT fit into your description of a Telco tech. Oh and by the way… I’ve met a LOT of OLD guys that couldn’t or wouldn’t learn anything new; nor could they comprehend the changes and challenges facing our industrury.

You might check with your local supply house, Graybar ect, if you have one. The guys working the counter should have a feel for the techs that come in and buy stuff.

How about Monster, Dice, Hotjobs, Careerbuilder, etc .com. If I was looking for a job that is where I would go.

I hear what your saying about the Air Force guy CMDL_GUY. The best tech we have in the house is ex-Navy. He can do voice/data or anything else he sets his mind to. Several of our customers and competitors has tried to steal him over the years. But to answer your question...........I'm like Ed. IF you can find a young person willing to work and learn you are better off teaching them yourself.

I know that I have been trained hands-on by some of the best. The techs at my dad's work are top notch...and they don't mind helping me out. I think they actually like the assistance on the jobs!

i have a tech that moved up there a couple of years ago, he is working for direct tv right now, but he travels too much. PM me or email me and i will pass it on to him. like Ed said, we would rather have some one that is young and wants to learn our way, than someone we have to break habits with
