MICS 7.0. Has a 350 kVA battery backup. Small, but enough to keep blinks from causing a system reboot. Or so I thought.
Customer has had several times when they come into the office in the morning and find the alarm set has a message that the system restarted overnight. Today it happened while they were using the phones. Got cut off, not a pretty sight.
Is there anything else that would cause these restarts? Is the 350 kVA big enough to eliminate blinks? Any suggestions?
Thanks! Jim

Depends what other cabinets are installed with the MICS. I sell and install APC products. You can go to their web site (apcc.com) and choose the Selectors. Their, you can put in what equipment you have and how long you want it to stay up and it suggests backups.

Other manufactures have the selectors as well. Yes,these systems should always have a UPS in front of them, as large as the budget can handle.
Also could be a power problem with voltage drops & spikes. Maybe talk to your friendly neighbourhood sparkie about a voltage regulator.

I have used Oneac UPS systems while working for Bell South so I have charts that state that the MICS cabinet is rated 119Va/80 watt, digital station module is 30/20 and analog modules are 90/60.
If you like to get real technical we need to know the type of VM and number of DID trunk cartridges.
Out of curiosity I went to APC web site and their figure was way low compared to my Oneac charts which are actually several years old.
The 350 VA unit should be good(if not too old) for any "brown out" condition as well as 10-15 minutes outtage time. Those batterys are usually not good for more than 36-40 months.
Hope this helps. Have a great day

When I added the UPS to this system (MICS cabinet only, no expansion modules. Call Pilot cabinet is actually located upstairs in another circuit, on another UPS.)I was just trying to keep power blinks from restarting the system.
This is the place where I've had _multiple_ calls over the last couple of years trying to solve wierd LSDS card failures. I have everything I can think of to protect this system. Most on the incoming POTS lines.
On the power side I have a ITW Linx power strip, and an APC 350. A very inexpensive ups that I thought would cover me. If this site has power problems, perhaps a better quality ups, not necessarily bigger, would be prudent. I'm sure APC has different units, and maybe I shouldn't be shopping at the local discount store for this purchase!

I just used APC's selector (mics cabinet w/1-6 exp cabinets) with 0% expansion and 5 minutes. Its suggested the APC 450. I'm thinking the 350 is way to small.

Most of the UPS manufactures state not to plug your UPS into another type of surge protector; plug directly into the source. By plugging into a surge protector may create power anomalies detected by UPS, and switch the unit into battery mode.

I've read the same, but I think they are aimed specifically at the low priced "You get what you pay for" stuff. ITW, Ditek, ONEAC, and other quality devices do not appear to cause problems, in my experience. John C. (Not Garand)
