Most newer phones I've seen can be used as a modem with bluetooth.

junkman is right....most newer phones CAN be used as a modem through the bluetooth, however, the Q cannot.
The blackberry can though as well as the Treo.
Again....if you need to be able to access office documents (edit I mean) then the blackberry will definitely not work, it can't even open them. I would talk to a Verizon dealer and get a demo of the Treo700. A little bigger but can do what you need. The only issues I have seen with our clients with the Treo is that it takes some getting used to.

I have always been a Motorola fan UNTIL ---- the last two just didn't hack it.
My friend that is the T-Mobil guy has had nothing but problems with Motorola.
Nokia and Samsung seem to be the big winners.
My 2.98 $.

I'm not familiar with Verizon's plan but do they give you after hours free data as well as voice Ed?
All the cell providers here still charge for any data transmissions even when the plans have cheaper voice or free voice after a certain time, scoundrels!

My Blackberry is the worst thing I've ever bought. It's laid out wrong, easy to hangup on people due to the location of the push to talk and release button, freezes up, etc. You hear that RIM? Worst thing ever. And I had a Chevy Vega in the 70s. Even that turkey was more reliable and useful.

I use the Motorola V557. I use the bluetooth feature to connect my laptop to the net while on the road.
I really like the Motorola Razor.........but to my understanding they don't have car kits for them. We also use 3-watt boosters behind the car kit which is a must in this neck of the woods due to poor cell service.
That's my $.99 worth.
