OK, got an NEC DSX160 with overhead paging via Muzak installation.

What we need is a way to run a contact closure at the frot door and have it chime over the overhead speakers when the door opens. Like a security system does (though they don't have a security system). Muzak only provides one input for paging.

The DSX cannot run a "door chime" over the paging port, just a door box chime, which is not what they want. Any ideas on how to do this? Was thinking there may be a box of some sort that would accept both devices and hook to the overhead amp with one connection.

Hope that makes sence!

Install a small tone generator and a dpdt relay connect page to n.c. and tone to n.o. common to amp and let door switch control the relay. You may want to setup time delay circuit so tone dosen't stay on all the time door is open.

Don't know why you think this has anything to do with the phone system.

As Merritt says, tone generator triggered by a momentary door annunciator switch. This is available from any security distributor and will provide a momentary contact closure when the door is opened.

Tone generator is available from Viking.

Then:

You could simply take the tone generator audio out and "Y" it with phone system page at the amplifier page input. The tone generator should have a level control so you can adjust the level through the speakers.

Does your customer realize how annoying this is going to be? In a few restaurants/coffee shops where I have installed alarms, my customers have me turn on the chime function and then after a week or less tell me they will shoot someone if we don't turn it off.

Ive done it using the night ring function on the paging amp .

the viking PA2A Evan has a choice of tones available.

you might just see if the existing muzac amp allows night ring through a dry contact

Another way would be to get a Bogen TPU amp and pipe the muzak through it. The TPU has page input with music mute and dry contact night chime for door.

There sure is a lot of wireless stuff that will suit this type of application. I believe that even Lowes and Home Depot carries them now.

Yeah, I wouldn't spend a lot of money on this. I agree with Kyawa and Ed.

kewl...thanks all. I wasn't sure if splitting that with a "y" splitter would work. Also not sure why I never thought of the TPU, though I can't touch the muzak equipment other than to plug in the paging.

This should get me in the right direction. Thanks again!

Well, here is my new issue with this. Using the Viking MTG-10 and a standard dry contact the chime will soung as long as the door is open. I would like it to chime only once when the door initially opens.

Anyone know of any contacts that will do this?
